Protruding ear surgery preparations

This ear surgery does not require any specific preparation. Roughly three weeks before the plastic surgery itself you should stop using any medicaments that has impact on blood clotting. Protruding ear surgery requires a good health and the convalescence takes around 14 days.

How is the ear surgery done?

On the back side of the auricle an incision is made. The incision is placed in the flexural groove that can be found between auricles and the area behind the ears.

Anesthesia and otoplasty

Otoplasty can be done either outpatient or under local or full anesthesia. If the ear surgery is done under local anesthesia the patient is immediately released home after the ear surgery. In the case of full anesthesia one day of hospitalization is required.

After the otoplasty

After the ear surgery 14 days of convalescence are required. Few days after the plastic surgery you can feel considerable pain in the ears (especially if you are adult) but that can be decreased by medicaments that will be provided by doctor.

Bandages and ear surgery otoplasty

Patients head is bandaged with an elastic bandage that is padded with cotton wool right after the ear surgery. Sometimes special elastic slips are used after otoplasty. The next day replacing the previous bandage for new one is required. Also it is recommended to wear headdress for the period of 14 days 24 hours a day and then another 14 days but only during the night while sleeping. You can not wash your head sooner then 3 days after the ear surgery. Few days after the otoplasty bandage can be substituted with some softer bandage similar to headdress or already mentioned elastic slip. Make sure to follow strictly the recommendations about wearing those bandages as stated by a doctor.

Hospitalization after Otoplasty

If undergone under local anesthesia most patients are released home the same day. In the case of full anesthesia 1 day hospitalization is a must.

Complications related to ear surgery

In case of ear surgery of protruding ears there aren’t many common complications however some general complications like swelling, spacing wound, infection and so on may occur. Specific complication after this ear surgery otoplasty can be decreased ear sensitivity, redness of the ears or persistent swelling.
